What number sense means at this stage
Number sense is the understanding that sits underneath arithmetic: knowing that 12 comes after 11, that 18 is larger than 8, and that numbers move in predictable steps. A child who has it can reason about a number they have not memorized. These pages practice two visible parts of it, continuing a sequence and judging which of two numbers is larger, because both can be checked on paper.
How the pattern rows work
Each row in section A shows five numbers with one box left empty. Some rows step by one and some step by two, so a child cannot simply assume the next number and has to look at the gaps first. Encourage saying the numbers out loud along the row. Hearing "five, seven, nine" makes the missing step audible in a way that reading silently often does not.
Reading the comparison symbols without guessing
Section B asks for the greater-than, less-than, or equal sign between two numbers. The common shortcut is to describe the symbol as a mouth that eats the bigger number, which works but can leave a child unable to explain their answer. A steadier habit is to name the larger number first, then place the wide end of the symbol beside it. One pair on most pages is deliberately equal, which catches children who are matching shapes rather than thinking about size.
Using the answer key as a teaching page
Page two lists every answer in order. Rather than marking the page alone, try handing the key to the child for the last two or three rows and letting them check their own work. Self-checking turns a wrong answer into something to investigate instead of something to be corrected on, and it keeps the adult free to watch how the child is reasoning.
